Opus 22
Opus 22
This aria was written as a part of a final project for the Implications of Generative AI on Arts and Culture course at The Glenn Gould School of Music, where in attempting to generate an entire opera using only AI with minimal input, I decided to incorporate a blind test into one of the arias written by ChatGPT by not listening to any of Udio's audio outputs of the same text (listen to it here), for further exploration on the distinction between AI and human art. In order to distinguish my compositional voice from that of Udio’s as much as possible, I sought to produce an extremely dramatic work that pushed the limits—most notably by straining the soprano on repeated high Cs, to signify humanity’s own overreach as it comes to terms with the abilities of AI (and also to spite certain vocalists in the process). The contrast challenges audiences to consider what distinguishes human creativity from AI-generated outputs. By comparing the emotional depth, subtlety, personal style and nuance of human compositions with the calculated, algorithm-driven outputs of AI, this experiment sought to create a dialogue on whether art needs to be inherently tied to human experiences and emotions, or if machines can ultimately emulate this authenticity.
(P.S. I swear I typed this description myself).
