Portraits

I do not enjoy taking portraits of humans, as their expression always looks contrived in some way, and the photograph ends up looking plain unnatrual or insincere to me. I also have inherent issues with working with other humans, as it feels awkward commanding them on how to pose, shoving a camera in their face.

The great thing about photographing my household's canine, Odin, is no matter what, his expression will always be candid, and I do not ever have to direct him on how to posehe does it just fine on his own.

This is a portrait of Odin taking in the views from the peak of Mill Hill. I think it is successful as a portrait because the background is well-blurred, there is some contrast between his red leash and the greens in the background, and the lighting is not harsh. To me, this portrait brings out a sort of gracefulness in this otherwise yappy and overexcited canine.

Odin's tongue hangs out as he stops for a breather after rambunctiously running around up and down the hills. Though his nose is a tad out of focus, I think this portrait works well because his expression is simply so sincere.
Mode: Aperture Priority • F-stop: f/4 • Exposure time: 1/500s • ISO: 100 • Focal Length: 29mm • White Balance: Manual • Focus: Manual
I was hoping to convey a sorrowful feel from the harsh sun shining through a gap in the blinds, illuminating only half of Odin with nothing but darkness in the background. He longingly stares out into the outdoors, trapped inside the prison of darkness that is my household.
Mode: Aperture Priority• F-stop: f/2.8 • Exposure time: 1/15s • Focal Length: 8mm • White Balance: Manual • Focus: Manual
Odin looks up in anticipation, awaiting a treat. In the background there is a fallen moss-covered tree which adds some interest to the portrait, but it does not take the viewer's attention away too much from the subject.
Mode: Aperture Priority • F-stop: f/5.6 • Exposure time: 1/30s • ISO: 200 • Focal Length: 135mm • White Balance: Manual • Focus: Manual
Odin pauses on some mossy rocks, curiously looking around the grounds of Mount Work Regional Park. Though the photograph required some shake-reduction post-production, I am happy with the depth of the forest, along with the angle I chose.
